Chef Cutlery

If a person is an aspiring chef, cutlery is a key bank of knowledge to attain. Quality knives and knife skills are integral to success as a chef. Anyone learning to use and handle cutlery should:

• Keep knives sharp –Cutlery is only as effective as the chef makes it. An aspiring chef can keep items sharper longer by cutting on cutting boards that are either made of wood or plastic. Blades should also be sharpened from time to time. This can be done by using sharpening steel or a sharpening stone.

• Chop carefully – Food should always be chopped slowly and carefully – especially when it is being chopped by a novice chef. Cutlery is sharp. The best way for a chef to cut is to use a rocking motion. Some part of the knife should always be touching the cutting surface.

• Saw it – In some cases, like when cutting bread, a serrated knife should be used. Remember that regardless of which type of knife is being used always cut away from the body. This significantly reduces the possibility of an accident occurring.

• Wash knives by hand – This If a person wants to be a chef, cutlery care is important. Hand washing in soapy water is the best policy. This protects the blades as well as the handles of the cutlery.

For an aspiring chef, cutlery guidelines like those mentioned above will help.
