Kitchen Knives

If kitchen knives are well-cared for, they can be used for a long time. Some of the things a person can do to care for these knives include:

• Clean – Kitchen knives should be cleaned soon after each use. The best way to clean these knives is to use hot, soapy water to wash them in. After the knives are washed, they must be rinsed well to remove the soap and then dried well to avoid having moisture damage the blade from being left on for too long. It is best to keep kitchen knives out of dishwashers for best results. Most detergents are too harsh for them.

• Safety counts – A person should find a place where they are able to store their knives where they will not be damaged and also where they cannot be accessed by children. A knife block on an area of the counter out of reach to children is a good place to place them. Also, if kitchen knives are kept in a drawer, perhaps it would be best to place them in plastic sleeves so that the blades are not accidentally grabbed.

• Know the uses – A person can usually see that not all knives look alike, but he or she may not know why they look differently. Small paring knives are best to use for slicing and peeling fruits and vegetables. Knives that are serrated are typically used to slice through fresh breads. If a person is unsure about which kitchen knives should be used, it may be best to simply use a chef’s knife, which is more of a jack-of-all-trades type of knife.
