Knives

Knives are a big part of any kitchen. There are a wide variety of styles and quality available. Here are some tips for selecting a new knife:

• Long knives – When looking for long knives, this does not necessarily mean that the visible blade itself is long. Rather, it means that the metal from which the blade is formed extends deep into the handle. These knives are sturdier, more durable and safer to use.

• Get a handle – Some people like the way synthetic materials feel in their hands. Others prefer to grip metals instead. When shopping, ask to hold the knife as though you were chopping something. You should know immediately if it feels good in your hand or not.

• Get a chef’s knife – Every kitchen must have a 10-inch chef’s knife. While there are other knives that will be needed, it is the chef’s knife that will do the most work and is the most versatile.

• Consider others – After purchasing a chef’s knife, there are several other utilitarian types of knife that will come in hand: a 4-inch boning knife and a 6-inch chopping knife are two styles that will get a lot of use in the kitchen.

Before buying, consider all of the ways you use a knife in the kitchen and then decide which will best accomplish your kitchen goals.
